Welcome!

Thank you for booking an appointment with the Writing Center.

Students may make up to two 30-minute appointments on the same day.

General guidelines:

  • Appointments appear in 30 or 60 minute blocks (depending on appointment type), but sessions will conclude shortly before posted end time to allow tutors time for passing/prep of next appointment.
  • Online tutoring sessions will share documents via GoogleDocs. Online REAL-TIME sessions will be held via Zoom. Directions/links will be provided in your appointment confirmation email.
  • Students with multiple "no show" missed appointments may lose the ability to make appointments for online Writing Center services.
  • NOTE: If classes are cancelled and campus is closed for any reason (example: snow), ALL tutoring appointments are cancelled. Please reschedule for a later date.

About the Writing Center

We want you to leave your tutoring session knowing more about writing than you did when you came in. We do not simply want you to earn a better grade on a particular paper; our goal is for you to become a better writer.

The Writing Center provides assistance with writing assignments from all courses, not just English. All SMCC students are welcome to drop in for a 30-minute session with a peer or faculty tutor who will get you on course to revise your draft and improve your writing. We will discuss the ideas you are trying to get across, while paying attention to thesis clarity, logical organization of ideas, and different ways to structure sentences.

How to be prepared to visit the Writing Center

The Writing Center offers drop-in assistance from faculty and trained peer tutors. Come prepared with the following to have a productive session:

  • A copy of your assignment or syllabus
  • The due date of the assignment
  • An electronic copy of your document
  • An idea of your concerns (planning, thesis, organization, content, citation, grammar)
  • A question you have for the tutor
  • Your student ID

Remember to give yourself at least 24 hours to make revisions! Writing tutors may not work on same-day due date assignments.

Consider completing a Writing Preparation form prior to your session (downloadable below). This will save you time!
