Summer 2020 Writing Center Online

SMCC's Writing Center is online this summer! There are three options for accessing support.

No appointment; Real-Time Support

Join these sessions to chat with a writing tutor or to study with a buddy. There may be multiple students in the drop-in session at the same time. Drop-in tutoring happens in Zoom. You will be placed in a waiting room for the host to grant access. All guests must use their SMCC email address to be admitted. Any abuse of this virtual space may be subject to the Student Code of Conduct. Click on Drop-In Room in the box below to access support.

Appointment; Real-Time Support

Make an appointment to have a document reviewed by a writing tutor. The booking form will give you the choice of document submission or live-chat with a tutor. All documents are reviewed in shared Google Docs. The live-chat option will occur in Zoom, and the tutor can review the document in real-time with you. More instructions will be included in your appointment confirmation. Click on Kate W.  in the box below for this type of service.

Appointment; Document Submission

Make an appointment to have a document reviewed by a writing tutor. You will need to share your document and assignment instructions in a Google Doc with your tutor. The tutor will review and comment on your document within 24 hours of the appointment time.  This service does not happen in real-time. More instructions will be included in your appointment confirmation. Click on Sierra F. or Anna M. in the box below to schedule an appointment for this type of service.

COVID Remote Tutoring Schedule

Please click on "Drop-In Room" or a tutor's name to access the service provided. Your appointment confirmation will contain detailed instructions. You DO NOT need to stay for the entire drop-in time - pop in with a question or stay and study!

How to Use the Writing Center

The Writing Center offers drop-in assistance from faculty and trained peer tutors. Come prepared with the following to have a productive session:

  • A copy of your assignment or syllabus
  • The due date of the assignment
  • A hard copy of your paper
  • An idea of your concerns (planning, thesis, organization, content, citation, grammar)
  • A question you have for the tutor
  • Your student ID

Remember to give yourself at least 24 hours to make revisions! Writing tutors may not work on same-day due date assignments.

Consider completing a Writing Preparation form prior to your session (downloadable below). This will save you time!

About the Writing Center

We want you to leave your tutoring session knowing more about writing than you did when you came in. We do not simply want you to earn a better grade on a particular paper; our goal is for you to become a better writer.

The Writing Center provides assistance with writing assignments from all courses, not just English. All SMCC students are welcome to drop in for a 30-minute session with a peer or faculty tutor who will get you on course to revise your draft and improve your writing. We will discuss the ideas you are trying to get across, while paying attention to thesis clarity, logical organization of ideas, and different ways to structure sentences.
